Samsung CL5/PL10 Camera Boasts PMP Capabilities Actually Recognises Faces

With all manner of gadgetry bringing multi-functionality to the table
(the broad abilities of cell phones being a prime example) it was only a
matter of time before camera manufactures looked to bring additional
functionality to their devices and, to that end, Samsung have done just
that with their new Samsung CL5 compact digital camera (known as the
PL10 in Europe) which boasts portable media player capabilities (albeit
on a seemingly rather rudimentary level limited, from an audio
perspective, to the MP3 file format).

The 9 megapixel Samsung CL5/PL10 is very much what we would term as
being a 'fashion compact' in being obviously designed for those looking
for a capable (if not especially exciting) reasonably priced compact
camera to tuck away in a bag or pocket in offering point and shoot
functionality paired with a range of suitably bright colors - namely
silver, royal black, arty red, candy pink and purple.
Coming with a 2.7 LCD screen, the Samsung CL5/PL10 offers all the usual
suspects you'd expect from a competitively priced point and shoot camera
such as Smart Auto Scene Recognition boasting 11 settings, Digital Image
Stabilisation technology, Blink Detection Mode, et al but the Samsung
CL5/PL10's face detection technology is especially interesting as it
will purportedly not only detect faces but actually recognise them.
Samsung's press release states 'the camera actually recognizes the
people you're taking photos of. Face Recognition prioritises friends,
family and those you photograph most and then allows you to search
through your photos on your camera by your favourite faces.' I wonder if
it'll recognise pets?

Naturally, given the obvious target market, we should add that the
Samsung CL5/PL10 also comes with Beauty Shot mode which serves to touch
up a subject's skin tone for a 'brighter and smoother' complexion. Ah,
how the camera never lies.

The Samsung CL5/PL10 compact digital camera is set to begin shipping
from April and will retail at around the 179GBP price point and we
hardly feel that we're putting out neck on the line in stating that its
going to sell like hot cakes (especially the Candy Pink version, to
teenage girls, in the main, probably).
