continuity here on TFTS (albeit at the expense of appearing obsessed
with all things durable) we thought we'd give a brief nod of recognition
to the Freecom ToughDrive Sport ruggedized external hard disk which,
seemingly, sets itself in direct competition with external SSD units
(which offer enhanced durability by default). That said, quite to the
extent Freecom can make inroads in this respect is wholly open to
question. Or, to put it another way, if you can live with far more
restrictive capacities currently offered by SSDs in comparison to HDDs,
personally, in terms of durable storage solutions, we'd go with SSDs
without hesitation.
Of course, as noted above, SSDs cannot compare to HDDs in terms of
capacities offered right now, so if you need masses of storage you
ultimately have little option to go the HDD route and, in this respect,
the Freecom ToughDrive Sport external hard disk will undoubtedly find a
market with those needing a durable, highly portable storage solution
that can withstand its fair share of knocks and scrapes.
Capable of withstanding drops of up to 2 meters only a 'flat surface'
(we assume the unspecified flat surface referred to is a reasonably hard
surface as opposed to a particularly well cut out block of foam) thanks
to its internal anti-shock mechanism, the Freecom ToughDrive Sport
external hard disk, which Freecom detail as being the 'toughest and
sportiest drive there is' comes with 256 bit MD5 encrypted hardware
password protection, integrated USB cable and 'extensive backup
software' as is available now in 250GB, 320GB and 500GB capacities.
