the Constellation and Constallation ES ranges, which include their
highest ever capacity HDD, the 7,200rpm 2TB Constellation ES - which is
set to compete directly with Western Digital’s recently announced
2TB HDD.
The new 2TB Constellation ES hard drive, which is joined by two other
3.5″ Constellation ES HDDs offering 500GB and 1TB capacities, will
be made available with either a 3-Gb/s SATA interface or a 6-Gb/s SAS
2.0 interface for ’superior data protection at industry-leading
speeds’ and features not only an enhanced power saving mode,
PowerChoice, but will also offer government grade security with what
Seagate term as an ‘SED-option’.
Additionally, adding to the Constellation range, two standard 7,200rpm
Constellation (sans ES designation) hard drives have also been announced
offering 160GB and 500GB storage capacities which will sport SATA
interfaces with the 500GB unit also being offered with SAS 2.0 interface.
At present Seagate have not detailed the pricing of any of the newly
announced Constellation and Constellation ES hard drives though the ES
variants will purportedly commence shipping (specifically in
Xyratex’s range of storage units) sometime in the summer whilst
the standard Constellation HDDs will start appearing sometime in April
with Dell already known to be taking up the units.
