just recently covered the Century Plus One LCD-8000U and the Samsung
SyncMaster U70 auxiliary displays, along comes another two USB
sub-monitors in the form of MIMO's UM-710 and UM-740.
Offering the same USB connectivity as the two aforementioned
sub-displays - allowing you to ‘bolt-on’ one or more at your
leisure (depending on just how many USB ports you have going spare) -
both the MIMO UM-710 (pictured above) and the UM-740 (pictured below)
sport 7″ 800 x 480 resolution displays offering 352cd/m2
brightness and 400:1 contrast ratio and, like the above linked Century
Plus One LCD-8000U, both offer Windows and Mac compatibility (though it
appears that whilst the MIMO UM-710 offers Mac compatibility by default
the MIMO UM-740 will take a little work to make it as Mac-friendly in
requiring a third-party touchscreen driver). Of course, this is still
better that what Samsung’s SyncMaster U70 has to offer Mac users
on account of the U70 being a Windows only device.
In terms of difference between the two new MIMO sub-monitors, as you may
have already gathered from the above, the MIMO UM-740 offers touchscreen
functionality whereas the MIMO UM-710 doesn’t whilst the UM-740
also offers up an integrated microphone and webcam.
The MIMO UM-710 sub-monitor will set you back just shy of $130 whilst,
if you fancy a little touchscreen goodliness, the MIMO UM-740 will set
you back just short of $200.
UPDATE: Well, having started this post by saying we’re in danger
of becoming sub-monitor central we see that Piyush has just posted about
yet another sub-monitor - the D-Link SideStage - whilst I was publishing
this. Talk about coincidence…
