an ideal repository for backing up the countless digital files that are
generated these days in media-savvy households. The EX487 is an
intelligent server that can be accessed from any computer on a home
network and controlled remotely. Automatic file organization across PCs
on a network and auto publishing of photos to online social media sites
are useful features. The Media Collector is a feature that automatically
scans machines on the network for new images that may have been added.
Compatibility with Amazon’s S3 online backup allows you to benefit
from an additional layer of security as the EX487 creates duplicate
folders on the Amazon data storage site.
The server’s main job is that of back-up and its two 750GB drives
offer up to 1.5TB of storage; you can also take home the slightly
cheaper version which offers only 750GB of storage. The EX487 will be
available from 5th January - 2009. $749 for 1.5GB storage and $599 for
750GB storage. A 2GB RAM means that the server can comfortably run
several apps simultaneously and manage both Mac and PC at the same time.
You need to have at least one PC on the network for the purpose of
setting everything up since Mac compatibility is limited to backup and
browsing. The good news for Mac users is that you can use the EX487 as
an iTunes server.
