Samsung Intros HD103UI EcoGreen F1 1TB ‘Low Power’ Hard Disk Drive [Offers 50% Less Power Consumption Than Standard 1TB HDDs]

Samsung have announced the latest hard disk drive in their EcoGreen
range in the form of the HD103UI EcoGreen F1 1TB hard disk drive which,
according to Samsung, can be used as both an internal unit and external
unit for desktops and offers up to 50% reduced power consumption in
comparison to standard 1TB HDDs and around 15% less power than other
low-powered 1TB HDDs.

Introduced by T.J. Lee, vice president of sales & marketing for Samsung
Electronics' Storage Division, Samsung's new 5400rpm, 3.0Gbps SATA
EcoGreen F1 1TB hard disk drive offers the highest capacity per disk for
one terabyte hard drives, at 334GB per platter, this reducing the number
of components required whilst also serving to increase the drive speed,
leading to improved performance regardless of the drive's reduced power
requirements. Additionally the new EcoGreen F1 1TB hard disk drive also
comes with SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies ensuring quiet
operation and a 'reinforced flying on demand (FOD) technology controls
the distance between the disk and the head, a safety measure to protect
the head and raise the stability of data stored on the disk'.

Samsung EcoGreen F1 1TB HDD Features:

Max. 334GB Formatted Capacity per Disk
Serial ATA 3.0Gbps Interface Support
Improved recording stability over temperature with PMR
Advanced dynamic FOD control for best data integrity
Intelligent compensation of external disturbance
SATA Native Command Queuing Feature
Device Initiated SATA Power Management
Staggerd Spin-up Support
Environment friendly product with RoHS compliance
Improved performance with dual-ARM based firmware
ATA S.M.A.R.T. Compliant
ATA Automatic Acoustic Management Feature
ATA 48-bit Address Feature
ATA Device Configuration Overlay Feature
NoiseGuard

The EcoGreen F1 1TB HDD is aimed squarely at desktops as opposed to
notebooks - where the slightest conservation in power can reap extremely
positive results in terms of battery life, and therefore notebook
endurance - however we be extremely surprised if a 2.5'
notebook-friendly version of the EcoGreen F1 1TB HDD is not in the works
at the point of writing.

According to Samsung's press release, the EcoGreen F1 1TB HDD will
become available in the second quarter of '08 and will retail for just
shy of $200.
