AT&T Takes On Google AT&T Complains to FCC About Google Voice Number Blocking

After Apple, it is now AT T s turn to join the we hate Google Voice
bandwagon. The telecom giants have written a letter to the almighty FCC
claiming that the Google Voice service violates FCC regulations as it
blocks certain numbers like adult chat lines which are operated by rural
carriers. So why is AT T so concerned about this issue one may ask? Well
in a nutshell, most ย rural carriers levy high operating charges which
telecom companies like AT T have to pay since they are not allowed to
block these numbers. Since Google is getting away with blocking them,
the big guns at AT T are crying foul.

AT T argues that Google Voice is similar to a traditional phone service
and thus Google should adhere to the same rules. However Google
counterattacks with a very valid defense, which is, it s a free web
based service and hence isn t subject too common carrier laws. Also more
importantly, Google Voice is currently invitation-only and isn t planned
to be a substitute for a traditional phone service.

Interestingly Google agrees that the carrier compensation system is
indeed and wants the FCC to take the necessary steps. But the
company is also quick to point out that the FCC doesn t have
jurisdiction over the functionality of software applications and
therefore cannot regulate Google Voice.

So looks like the battle lines have been drawn and soon one may have to
pick sides. While I do agree there is some validity in AT T s argument,
however I can t help but think they are more concerned about Google
Voice eating away at their profits rather than an evening the playing field!
