iPhone/iPod Touch game, Apple s App Store was crossing two more
milestones in terms of total number of downloads and total number of
available apps in its 20 strong categories.
Earlier today, Apple revealed that its App Store has experienced over 2
billion downloads. Savor that for a while. That s 2 followed by 9
zeroes. If you download 1000 apps a day, it will take you more than
5,479 years to complete that many downloads. Not to mention the
astronomical credit card bills.
It wasn t too long ago when Apple held its 1 billionth download event
that was won by a 13 year old! And now they are celebrating 2 billion
downloads. This just goes to show that Apple is gaining momentum like
very few other companies are doing in the current market.
This news was coupled with the announcement of the App Store s total app
count reaching the 85,000 mark. Apple fanatics (like me) and general
tech-heads will remember that it was only earlier this month when Apple
had announced that the App Store has over 75,000 apps.
Sometimes when I stop and think about it " I realize that the App Store
is like this small universe where everything that I want and need has
already been thought of.
The App Store is arguably the most successful software distribution
platform in the history of software distribution. In an age where
companies are losing sleep over piracy, Apple is constantly selling.
Sure there are (a lot of) free apps in there but no other software
distribution system, mobile or otherwise, has ever been this successful.
This claim is actually validated by the fact that every other company is
trying to mimic this success. Look at Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, etc. and
you will know what I am talking about.
